A crown is a dental restoration procedure that “rebuilds” a tooth, increasing its life and enhancing its function, durability and appearance. Crowning is a common procedure for teeth that are heavily filled, discoloured or have had root canal therapy. A crown can be made of porcelain, gold, or porcelain fused to gold, depending on the situation and cosmetic considerations. Two appointments are generally required. Procedure At the first appointment, any existing filling in the tooth is removed or reduced. The tooth is then reshaped to support the fitting of a crown. An impression is taken of the tooth, and a cast is made for preparing the crown. A temporary crown is fitted to protect the tooth while the permanent crown is being prepared. This generally takes around two weeks. The crown is fabricated to fit the reshaped tooth precisely. Tooth colour and shape are carefully matched. At the second appointment, the temporary crown is removed, and the permanent crown is “tried on for size”. If the fit, colour and shape are all perfect, the crown will be cemented in using state-of-the-art bonding materials.
